Not unless you find some ludicrously cheap VR headset in a yard sale or similar anyways. The Meta Quest 2 may have been recently passed by the newer Quest 3, but you still can't beat it on a budget. That's a lot more than the Quest 2, but ultimately worth the money. You do have to come to terms with paying more for this model over the Quest 2, however, as even the cheapest 128GB version will set you back $500 (£480, $700 AUD).

While I still don't have much faith in Mark Zuckerberg's dream of the metaverse, I do really, really like the Quest 3 for PC VR gaming. For non-gaming, I got two hours and 15 minutes of streaming video and watching sports. It fully charges in a couple of hours, or if you play from a seated position and don't mind, you can plug in a USB-C cable and play it while it's charging. You have a battery life of just under two hours for wireless play, which aligns with what Meta claims. The Quest 3 even offers the ability to draw out a safe play space all on its own, and it's surprisingly pretty good. There's no need to fiddle with base stations and the colorful passthrough feed means you can draw out your play space with ease. You go through a couple steps on the headset and the app and you're sorted. The beauty of the Quest 3, much like the Quest 2, is how simple it is to setup. This didn't seem to affect tracking whatsoever, thankfully, and we've not run into any issues with controller tracking so far.

The Quest 3 comes with a set of improved Touch Plus controllers, which no longer have the prominent ring around the hand like the older Quest 2 ones did. It's these cameras that help bring the Quest 3's mixed reality features to the fore, though admittedly these are only just getting off the ground right now.

A double tap on the headset's side provides a detailed view of your surroundings. It's now much simpler to read text on a phone or monitor. The passthrough cameras are vastly superior to those in earlier versions (even better than the Meta Quest Pro), offering a clearer and higher-quality image. There are other key quality of life improvements with the Quest 3, too. While the Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chip in the headset doesn't compare to an RTX 40-series GPU, it's sufficiently robust for many VR games via the headset's own storefront. The alternative is to tap into the built-in processor, Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2. This way you can still tap into Steam's extensive library of high-quality games. The first is over a robust Wi-Fi connection, ideally Wi-Fi 6E, using Air Link. While we tend to use this headset hooked up to a gaming PC via a cable (you'll need a high quality USB Type-C cable to get the job done), you can go cable-free via a couple of ways. That said, the included fabric strap still kinda sucks, and it's the first thing we'd recommend replacing. Since it no longer sticks out from your face as much, it's comfier to wear as the center of gravity is more central on your head. These lenses are what help it slim down in size versus the older model. The Quest 3 sports a 2064 x 2208 resolution per eye on pancake lenses. I recommend checking out the best VR games on PC if you want to build out your library in anticipation. There are plenty of other sci-fi titles to enjoy that aren't as intense, such as No Man's Sky. Half-Life: Alyx shows what VR is capable of, but it'll push your PC to the limits. Once you've secured one of the best VR headsets, the next step is figuring out the best VR games. If you can get it at a good discount, even better. While we'd love to see an upgraded model out of Valve, the Index still holds up really well.

If money is no object and you're just looking for the purest, most high-end VR headset out there, the Valve Index is the closest thing to having a holodeck in your office. It's not just that it's relatively affordable, it's one of few truly new-feeling VR headsets right now. Oodles of testing went into helping you decide which ones are worth your hard-earned cash, and I've landed on the Meta Quest 3 as the best VR headset for most users.
